There’s a number of different crawl space vapor barrier types on the market and you need to make sure you know how they differ.
While we often discuss the 12 mil vapor barrier, there’s many more we’ll be discussing today.
Crawl space vapor barriers are used during the crawl space encapsulation process. These vapor barriers are used to cover the crawl space walls and crawl space floors.
We use crawl space encapsulation to remove moisture from the crawl space. Moisture is the top reason for damages in the crawl space, not to mention the unsafe environment it can create with black mold.
While there’s several vapor barrier types to choose from, few of them are made equal.
Different Crawl Space Vapor Barrier Types
- 6 mil crawl space vapor barrier
- 8 mil crawl space vapor barrier
- 10 mil crawl space vapor barrier
- 12 mil crawl space vapor barrier
- 20 mil crawl space vapor barrier
Vapor Barrier Purposes
Each vapor barrier type and size plays a role in the encapsulation process.
The bigger the crawl space vapor barrier, the more protection that is offered. The 20 mil crawl space vapor barrier is the thickest and the 6 mil vapor is the smallest,
We typically see the 12 mil and 20 mil crawl space vapor barriers used in large crawl spaces while the smaller sizes are used in small crawl spaces.
